Height: 22.75 -27.5 inches

Color(s): White, white with orange markings, white with brown markings, or speckled brown - with and without larger brown markings.

Character: Often referred to as the Spinoni, this breed is a large, strong, and substantial dog with a distinctive appearance. In their hunting duties they exhibit great stamina and endurance and are also methodical and efficient. They are not considered a racy or flashy breed. As companions they exhibit a loving, sweet, and affectionate nature.

Temperament: The Spinone Italiano is exceedingly intelligent, exuberant, and cheerful. They take their hunting duties very seriously, but are lively and entertaining in the home environment. They thrive on human companionship and do not do well if left alone for extended periods of time. They will suffer separation anxiety and will become bored and destructive. Spinone Italianos are excellent with considerate children and other household pets, although they do have a tendency to chase after anything that runs. The Spinone Italiano is generally quiet and is not suited for use as protection. They have a very patient nature and will return respect they are given.

Care: This breed requires weekly brushing as well as occasional professional stripping of the coat. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary to preserve the integrity of the coat. The Spinone Italiano is typically a healthy breed but may be prone to hip dysplasia, bloating, or an inherited disease called Cerebellar Ataxia which causes an abnormal gait.

Training: The Spinone Italiano is quick to learn, but may be stubborn about performing their master's commands. They have a mind of their own and often want to make their own decisions regarding tasks assigned to them. Spinone Italianos must have proper socialization training to prevent timidity. They are very sensitive and do not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training methods. They require motivation, positive reinforcement, respect, patience, and consistency.

Activity: This breed's activity level varies. When indoors they are low to moderately active; when outdoors their activity level is medium to high. The Spinone Italiano benefits from securely leashed walks and makes an excellent jogging companion. They greatly enjoy family play sessions, swimming, and hunting. This breed does best in a home with a yard that is securely and highly fenced.
